North America's smallest and most widespread falcon, the American Kestrel can be found perched on roadside fences as well as on rooftops in the densest cities. For their size, they're fearsome predators, and their shrill call often announces their presence. They hunt by rapidly beating their wings to hover in place, scanning open territory below for grasshoppers or other small prey.
